A Croydon man has been jailed for more than two years after he pleaded guilty to a vicious, unprovoked attack on a pensioner in an Addiscombe fast food shop.

Neil Quinn, 23, was sentenced at Croydon Crown Court last Friday to 32 months imprisonment for greivous bodily harm with intent and 24 months for possession of cocaine with intent to supply. Both sentences will run concurrently.

Quinn had been remanded in custody following the incidents in October and November last year, which will now count towards his sentence.

The charge of GBH relates to an incident which took place in a chicken shop on Lower Addiscombe Road on November last year.

At around 12.15pm Vivian Church and his wife drove to the shop. The 67-year-old left his wife in the car while he went inside to order.

Inside, the pensioner heard Quinn verbally and religiously abusing members of staff. Without any provocation Quinn then turned on Mr Church and punched him repeatedly in the face.

Even when the man had fallen to the ground, Quinn continued his ferocious attack, kicking him in the face before jumping on his head.

The victim sustained fractures to his face and was left with severe swelling and bruising. His teeth were left broken and dislodged and his cuts had to be glued together when he was taken for treatment at Mayday Hospital.

Both the victim and his wife, who saw the horrific scene unfold from the car, were left shocked and traumatised.

Quinn, from Teevan Road in Addiscombe, was arrested shortly afterwards.

Mark Tomassi, defending, told the court that Quinn felt "deeply and thoroughly ashamed" by what he had done and asked that he be given maximum credit for his guilty pleas.

Quinn was ordered to pay £125 court costs and blew a kiss to his family in the public gallery before being led away from the dock.

Judge Stephen Waller QC told Quinn: "We have a duty to consider the danger to the public which you represent."
