Afrobeats star Fuse ODG flew in from Los Angeles to perform a one-off home-coming gig in Morden to encourage young people to vote in the upcoming election.

Around 300 young people attended the event, held at the Tooting and Mitcham Football Club on Friday, March 13, which was presented by TV’s June Sarpong.

Fuse ODG, a MOBO award winner, was raised in Mitcham and is best known for his 2013 single Antenna which reached number seven in the UK charts.

The event was held in conjunction with the Bite the Ballot campaign and Operation Black Vote, the latter of which launched a new app at the concert which will enable people to register to vote on their smartphones.

Mitcham and Morden MP Siobhain McDonagh, who helped organise the event, said: "It was brilliant, the audience were warm and receptive. It is great that Fuse hasn’t forgotten where he comes from despite his success."

As a young man Fuse ODG, real name Richard Abiona, lived in Phipps Bridge, Mitcham and attended the Archbishop Lanfranc Academy in Croydon.

Whilst at the academy Fuse ODG showed his community spirit by helping to set up the former Escape Youth Project so fellow pupils had somewhere to write and perform music during evenings and school holidays.

The project allowed young people from Merton showcase their skills in public.

At the last election more than half of 18 to 24-year-olds did not vote.

Labour MP Ms McDonagh said: "You can’t rely on mum and dad or college or the student union to make sure you are registered to vote any more.

"Anyone who wants to have their say at this election has to make sure they are registered.

"Registering online is easy to do and only takes three minutes. I want young people in Mitcham and Morden to have their say."

If you are over 18-years-old, register to vote online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote and the deadline is Monday, April 20.
