A soldier from Norbury missing for more than a month has reportedly been spotted.

Police today issued a fresh appeal to find Steven Mubanga, 20, after possible sightings in Westminister and Lewisham.

The trainee British Army soldier was reported missing on January 16 after failing to return to his barracks in Catterick, North Yorkshire, following a period of leave.

He left his Kilmartin Avenue home to catch a travel north on January 11, but police believe he never caught his train.

The two sightings were reported to police on Tuesday.

Detective Chief Inspector Sian Thomas said: "We're fairly sure that the reported sightings of Steven in Lewisham and Westminster were genuine, but we are very keen to make direct contact with Steven so that we can make sure he is safe and well.

"It's still unclear why Steven has gone missing, but I'd like to reassure him that whatever the reason, there will be support available for him and that his family are desperate to hear that he is OK.

Mr Mubanga had been due to graduate from his army training on Friday last week.

Officers have been interviewing his friends over his disappearance.

His aunt, Karen Guirhil, said: "Steven's got such a good future ahead of him and this is just completely out of character for him. He's such a fun-loving, caring, committed and responsible person.

"Steven, if you're reading this and you think that you're in any kind of trouble, then whatever it might be, I know that we can work it out together.

"I'm so proud of you and your cousin is missing you like crazy as well."

Mr Mubanga is black, about 5ft 10ins tall, of medium build, with short black hair. He wears black, square-rimmed glasses and often a baseball cap.

He was last seen wearing a grey, black and white hooded top, dark blue jeans, a black and green baseball cap and white Nike Air Jordan basketball trainers and carrying a JD Sports bag.

He has links to Camberwell and Streatham.
