Renovation works have begun to transform Croydon’s Old Town while preserving its heritage.

Buildings and shop fronts will be cleaned and repainted, shop signs, awnings and security shutters will be replaced and the historic features such as pilasters will be restored.

This is set to be completed in June.

Works are also due to start at the end of March on widening and repaving footpaths in Church Street and part of Frith Road, as well as putting in new cycle parking, trees and seating.

A pair of listed buildings in Church Street , number 27 (Meat Wise) and 61-63 (Bon Marche) will have improvements made to them.

These works are due for completion in September.

Cabinet member for economic development Councillor Toni Letts, said: "Croydon’s Old Town is home to some of our most historic buildings and has a major role to play in the wider regeneration of our town centre.

"As well as long established businesses, new ones have taken opportunities to create a secure and successful future for themselves.

"While looking ahead to the new, it is vital we don’t forget the past, and these works will help to revitalise this very important part of Croydon."

Last November the council’s cabinet approved the Old Town masterplan, setting out the role the area will play in the wider regeneration of Croydon town centre.
