A businessman who was on the run for six years until police tracked him down in Holland has been locked up for stabbing his business partner.

Husamettin Selimoglu had fallen out with the victim and on December 29, 2007, stabbed him several times in the head, leg and hand.

The victim – who was then 42 years old – was in a critical condition in hospital for several days before being discharged.

He suffered long-term injuries to his hands and leg as a result of the attack, which happened at the Anatolian Community and Cultural Centre in London Road, Croydon.

Selimoglu fled the country and a European arrest warrant was issued on July 17, 2008, for his arrest.

Detectives from Croydon's wanted offenders unit learned he was possibly living in the Amsterdam area in Holland and worked with the Dutch police to bring him back to the UK.

The 54-year-old, of London Road, Croydon, was eventually found and arrested by officers in Holland on November 3 last year.

He was extradited back to the UK on January 13 and then charged with attempted murder.

After a three day trial at Croydon Crown Court jurors found Selimoglu guilty of GBH with intent, but was found not guilty of attempted murder.

And at the court last Friday, December 5, he was sentenced to 14 years 10 months imprisonment.

Detective Constable Matt Day, from Croydon's wanted offenders unit, said: "This case demonstrates our commitment to bringing serious offenders to justice, no matter how long or difficult it may be to find and arrest them.

"Whilst it took a number of years to find Selimoglu, we never gave up and thanks to the help of the local Dutch police in the Amsterdam area, he was arrested and has now been convicted of a very serious crime.

"I hope that this can now give the victim some closure in the case, knowing that his attacker will be behind bars for a number of years."
