A man who died after being hit by an articulated lorry in West Croydon may have been paying his respects at a funeral just moments before he was killed.

The victim, thought to be in his 50s, was struck in Wellesley Road, near the junction with Station Road, at around 2.40pm today.

A driver, who was several vehicles behind the lorry, said there was a funeral going on at St Mary’s Catholic Church and she believes the dead man may have come from the church.

Your Local Guardian:

According to the witness, who does not want to be named: “There was a funeral going on at the left and he seemed to be wearing a dark coat, from what I saw, and I’m assuming he must have been part of that.

She said the traffic lights were green when the collision happened and she did not see the man step into the road.

London Ambulance Service sent an air ambulance, a road ambulance, a duty officer and a single responder in a car, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

London Fire Brigade and police have also attended.

Police have cordoned off Wellesley Road between the Fairfield Halls Roundabout and St James's Road.
