A young swimming sensation has been nominated for a Croydon Champions award.

Brandon Vencatachellum is just 10 years old and has already won the Surrey County Swimming Award, as well as the inter-district primary school gala that took place earlier this year.

He saw off competition from swimmers in his age group across the whole of Surrey and was the first ever pupil from Orchard Way Primary School to bring home the award.

Brandon, who lives in Shirley with his parents and older brother, first got into the pool when he was six months old.

He only started swimming competitively with South Croydon Swimming Club two years ago, yet has already collected a huge clutch of medals.

This year he was part of the Croydon team for the London Youth Games and, although they did not win, the relay team finished in a respectable third place.

His parents, Gina and Albo, are keen to support his new found ability.

Mr Vencatachellum said: “Of course we are very proud of Brandon for his achievements. He has been swimming from a very young age and has been trying very hard so it is nice to see some success for his efforts.

“His school is very proud as well as they have never really had any awards for swimming from any other students.”

Brandon was nominated by his grandmother, Allida.

Croydon Champions awards are given to those in the community who are honoured for their talent, bravery and commitment to what they have achieved.
