An internet paedophile who sexually assaulted a schoolgirl after grooming her online has been jailed for eight years.

Umesh Kulasingham of Croydon, used a number of aliases and had communicated with the victim in 2009, when she was just 10-years-old.

After gaining her trust over a period of time, the 39-year-old convinced her to indecently pose for him over the internet. He then sent the girl indecent images of himself.

Inner London Crown Court heard after the activity stopped, Kulasingham contacted the victim again in August 2011 through her friend.

He threatened to send pornographic images of the girl to friends via the internet if she refused to meet him. He then met his victim and sexually abused her.

He remained in contact with her and his offending only came to light when the victim's brother and sister discovered explicit text message on a mobile phone.

Kulasingham, who used the aliases Fiaz Khan, Arun Kula and Don GT, was arrested by officers from the MPS's Operation Sapphire Complex Case Team and to this day has refused to disclose his computer password.

Following a trial in January, Kulasingham was found guilty of two counts of engaging in sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15, two counts of grooming a girl under 13 and 13 counts of possession of indecent cartoon images of children.

He was also found guilty of one count of failing to provide passwords for encrypted computers.

DC Sarah Garrick said: "Kulasingham is a very intelligent, cunning, calculating, deceitful man, who hid the true nature of his offending from all his family.

"He created Facebook accounts from his address in alias names which he then used as cover to contact the victim. It is unknown how many other females he has contacted in this way.

"All of his contact with this victim was by the use of Facebook, MSN, Skype, webcam and numerous text messages. He has groomed a very young naive female.

"We know from interrogation of his mobile phone and computer that remains locked, that he was in contact with a number of other young girls who have never come forward.

"Today's sentence reflects the devious methods he has used for his own gains. We believe there are a number of victims who have not come forward and would encourage them to do so."

Anyone who has been contacted by this individual or someone else using the same method, should call police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
