Sutton United will be the venue for a football match which aims to raise both money and awareness for prostate cancer research this weekend.

Epsom & Ewell Old Boys Football Club will play against The Wheatsheaf Football Club at Gander Green Lane on Sunday (May 27).

The event, for Prostate Cancer UK, will involve three ex-professional footballers and has a £1,000 fundraising target.

Steve Day, Epsom & Ewell’s manager and club secretary, said: “It was something between the teams we had set up that we just wanted to get something together at the end of the season.

“There were a few players within both teams that had strong links to the charity.

“Family members within the team had the disease itself, so it was quite fitting really that we should do something at the end of the season in between the two teams.

“It’s actually something that’s never been done before within our league, so it was quite nice that we did it ourselves and got it sorted.”

Mr Day alongside his brother Chris, who plays for The Wheatsheaf which is an Ewell village pub team, got their respective sides together to organise the match.

Prostate cancer, he believes, must be discussed more so people – men in particular – are more aware about it.

He added: “Because we’re two football teams that are male-oriented, it’s these sorts of people that don’t know much about it.

“When I mentioned it first of all, people weren’t really aware or knew much about it. Now I’ve a lot of advertising on Facebook, on Twitter, created a big event, and people are starting to talk about it.

“Suddenly the word spreads across the pubs and that they kind of go, ‘Actually you’re right’.

“I thought by doing this, and all the people that have been affected in the teams who have got close family [members] that have had people diagnosed with it, I thought this was a great opportunity to do it.”
