The number of high-priced staff employed by Sutton Council has revealed.

In its annual 'town hall rich list', the TaxPayers' Alliance revealed that Sutton Council employed seven people earned at least £100,000 during the 2016/17 financial year.

Among the seven members of staff, only one name was listed, that being chief executive Niall Bolger who earned £169,029.

Although the names of the six other people on the list weren't released, it was revealed that a further two employees earned more than £150,000, with another having collected £144,356, all of which have a title of 'strategic director' in some form or another.

A spokesman for Sutton Council said they have been "very open and transparent about pay for senior staff."

A link already on the council's website discussed how much Mr Bolger was paid and why.

"Niall Bolger, our chief executive is paid £163k per year and he receives no performance related pay or bonuses," the post on the website said.

"Sutton's pay scale for the chief executive post is £134k - £167k. This scale is set by our executive committee of councillors.

"Last year the chief executives of other London boroughs received pay packages of between £150k and £241k.

"The national conditions of service are that Niall contributes 7.5 per cent of his salary to the local government pension scheme and Sutton's employer contribution to the pension fund for all contributing members of staff is 21.5 per cent.

"Niall receives no other form of income and any sums relating to conference speeches or non-executive directorships of other public bodies are paid to the Council. He receives no overtime or pay in lieu of leave."

Compared to its neighbouring borough in Croydon, Sutton Council has a relatively low amount of these high-priced members of staff.

Croydon was listed as employing 20 people who earned more than £100,000, including chief executive Jo Negrini at £185,000.
