A new skatepark has opened in Crystal Palace in part of a major improvement scheme for the area.

The skatepark has opened in Crystal Palace Park, where the first skateboarding competition in the UK was held in 1977.

The skatepark was chosen for funding following consultation with the community supported by the newly formed Friends of Crystal Palace Skatepark.

Iain Borden of Friends of Crystal Palace skatepark says: "We are delighted that skateboarding in being welcomed back to the middle of Crystal Palace Park, and that this wonderful new skatepark is now open to riders of all ages, abilities and styles. Everyone is very welcome to join in."

Sadiq Khan funded part of the skatepark, with Historic England and the council contributing to the scheme as well.

Councillor Peter Morgan, executive councillor for renewal & recreation said, "This latest welcome news is part of our plan and commitment to improve Crystal Palace Park and I am delighted to confirm the award from our Community Grants Fund to the Friends of the Crystal Palace Skatepark to hold a summer event later this year to celebrate the new facility."

A new cafe is set to open by early next year as the council push forward with a £23m improvement scheme.

Deputy mayor for planning, regeneration and skills, Jules Pipe, said: "The Mayor and I are pleased to provide funding for Crystal Palace Park while Bromley council progress with wider regeneration plans. Residents have been clear that a new skatepark is a priority and this will add to the array of sporting and social facilities they can already enjoy."
