Plans to transform Morden into a 'vibrant town centre' has moved a step closer with Merton Council reaching and agreement with Transport for London to be a key partner.

The partnership, the council said, will deliver a 'shared vision' for the town centre to improve and expand the shopping, increase business space to create more jobs, new and improved bus infrastructure, improved public space and more affordable homes.

Merton Council's leader, councillor Stephen Alambritis, said: “Morden is changing. There are more young people, the population is becoming more diverse and the number of people in Morden has increased.

“Morden already has so much to offer and is a great place for families. It benefits from great parks and open spaces. It’s at the beginning of the Northern Line and ideally placed to access the capital. However a recent consultation revealed that residents and visitors feel that the town centre has the potential to do better.

“Our vision is very simple. We want to make more of Morden by regenerating the town centre to offer new retail, new jobs and create a vibrant economy where people want to spend their time and money.”

London’s deputy mayor for transport Val Shawcross said: “It’s great news that these bold plans to transform Morden town centre are moving another step forward.

“By working together, TfL and Merton Council can make a real difference to the town centre with a reduction in traffic dominance helping to improve the health of local people, support economic growth and deliver homes and jobs.”

Graeme Craig, TfL’s Director of Commercial Development said: “We are delighted to be partnering with Merton Council on this fantastic project. This partnership demonstrates how public bodies working together can deliver attractive, well-designed and sustainable town centres.”

Merton’s Cabinet will meet on January 15 to agree terms by which the council and TfL will work together including obtaining a development partner to deliver the regeneration.
