A familiar face has agreed to move into Mathews Yard should a proposed redevelopment of the building take place.

The former operator of creative spaces and the cafe at Mathews Yard, 'Hoodoos', has agreed to terms that would see the company occupy the Surrey Street building once any redevelopment finishes.

Not everyone is happy about the possibility of the Croydon based music and events company moving in, namely the current owner of Matthew's Yard, Saif Bonar.

"Regeneration in Croydon now directly threatens Matthews Yard and all the work which has gone into building our space," he said.

"If planning permission is granted and the building is demolished without Matthew's Yard securing an alternative home, then we will be forced to close in Summer 2018."

After a disagreement nearly two years ago, Hoodoos left Mathews Yard.

Since then the company has had no fixed space to work out of.

But after agreeing with Regent Land & Developments (RLD) - the company behind the proposal - to move in, that could all change.

Richard Hamilton of Hoodoos said: "We're delighted to be looking forward to a bright future in the same location but in even better facilities to support local performance and creative industries."

RLD's managing director Pat Maher was also optimistic about the future.

"We are fully committed to preserving this space as a cultural hub and look forward to working closely with the Hoodoos."

But the future for Mathews Yard, which housed grass roots start-ups like Croydon Tech City and the Purley Festival, is uncertain.

Mr Maher remained hopeful.

"I am still open to discussions with Regent Land," he said.

"Whether it's with Regent Land or not, we will find another building."
