A Carshalton business has been named as the best pub in Greater London by Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA).

The Hope was one of 16 regional winners as CAMRA continues its search for the country’s National Pub of the Year 2018.

Rodger Molyneux, operations director and licensee, told Sutton Guardian: “We are what I would describe as a proper pub.

“We don’t have TVs or fruit machines. If there’s music, it’s live. We have a wide range of beers and we get to choose what beer we buy.”

They were named as CAMRA’s best pub in Greater London in 2012 and 2013 as well as in the last two years.

Rodger, who was one of the original founders of The Hope seven years ago, said it was still fulfilling to be recognised for their work.

He said: “We have 18 young staff and it gives them a boost to be named best pub in the whole of Greater London. It’s quite an accolade.”

For anyone in the area yet to visit the pub, Rodger advised: “We have a wide range of drinks and spirits. Our home cooked food is very good.

“If you come and sit down with a newspaper people will leave you alone, otherwise people will talk to you. We have a friendly bunch of customers.”

Next week, The Hope is hosting its annual 'Beer Fest on Thursday 28 until Saturday September 30.

“As well as the craft beers we have, there will be another 16 different beers out the back plus a couple of extra craft lines and up to six real ciders.

“There’s sure to be plenty of choice.”
