A warehouse on 128 Aurelia Road in Croydon could be turned into a Hindu temple.

A planning application has been submitted to Croydon Council by the to use the former Master Window London site as a Hindu cultural centre.

Under the proposal, the two existing workshop spaces in the west of the building will be converted into a temple prayer room and a meditation room.

It is proposed that the new centre will provide 18 full-time jobs and three part-time jobs. It will open between the hours of 8am and 9pm Monday to Sunday.

On top of every day proceedings, the proposal provides an estimate for how many attendees the temple would get for special events, such as Tamil New Year (100 people over the full day) and Diwali (80 people over the full day).

A planning application for the site was submitted in 2012 for the demolition of the warehouse and the construction of 27 new residential dwellings but was rejected as a result of:

• The form of development not being in keeping with the character of the area;

• The detrimental impact that the scheme would have to the amenities of the adjoining

properties;

• The lack of renewable energy use;

• The overprovision of car parking which would not encourage the use of sustainable alternatives;

• The lack of public space provision or a contribution towards the provision or improvement of

public space in the vicinity; and

• The lack of a contribution towards sustainable transport initiatives.

Council has invited people to comment on the application before the deadline closes on July 27.
