An “imminent risk to health due to a mouse infestation” has closed Morden Iceland just months after the same happened at its Mitcham store.

The low-cost supermarket off London Road was closed after an inspection which found there was an immediate risk to the public’s health.

The notice from Merton Council on the supermarket states: “There is an imminent risk to health due to a mouse infestation as droppings found throughout the shop floor and gnawed food found on the shelves.”

A council spokesperson said: “Following concerns raised by a member of the public, Merton Environmental Health officers inspected Iceland store in Morden and found evidence of mice infestation which poses a health risk to the public.

“As a result the store has been closed with immediate effect pending further investigation.”

It is not yet known when the store will reopen.

A spokesperson for Iceland said: “We aim for the highest standards in all our stores and sincerely apologise to all our customers for this pest issue, which has required the closure of our store in Morden and for any inconvenience or concern this may have caused.

“We have taken urgent action to thoroughly investigate the issue and are working hard both to deep clean the store and to strengthen its rodent proofing to guard against any recurrence.”
