A Wimbledon secondary school has shown solidarity with women and girls around the world by taking part in a 10k walk.

Over 700 pupils and staff at Wimbledon High School took part in the march as part of Plan UK’s international ‘Because I am a Girl’ campaign, which works to eliminate the barriers to gender equality around the world.

Head teacher at Wimbledon High School, Jane Lunnon, said: “I am delighted that the whole school community – girls, teachers, caretakers and other staff – came together to reflect on the challenges and inequalities that girls in other countries and cultures face, and to raise money for this great cause.

“I am so proud of them.”

Students at the girls’ school were also given an assembly by a representative from Plan UK who discussed the charity’s work promoting women's rights to education, as well as the issues faced by girls’ around the world including forced marriages and female genital mutilation.

The march, which took students from the school in Mansel Road up to and across Wimbledon Common on Thursday, March 16, was part of a fundraising effort for the charity. Although the total raised is not yet known, a similar event last year raised over £12,000.
