Sutton United have been forced to play a defender in goal after their only goalkeeper had to come off injured – just days after the club’s much-maligned decision to sack Wayne Shaw.
The National League side are looking to bounce back from Monday’s FA Cup defeat with their match against Torquay United at Palinmoor this afternoon, but have found themselves in real trouble after Ross Warner was substituted through injury.
With Sutton 1-0 down after 14 minutes, defender Simon Downer was forced to take over. It's not all bad news though, with the score now 2-2.
Shaw resigned on Tuesday after both the FA and Gambling association launched an investigation into whether he had broken strict betting rules while eating a pie during Sutton’s 2-0 loss to Arsenal.
The club’s days-old sponsor SunBets had promoted an 8/1 special offer on Shaw eating a pie during the match.
The 23-stone sub, known as the ‘Roly Poly Keeper’, was soon embroiled in a betting scandal and was asked to leave by the club’s hierarchy.
