A "cold-blooded" and "callous" rapist who stabbed a terrified teenager in the stomach after sexually assaulting her at knifepoint has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Costica Voedes, 33, of Epsom High Street, will not be eligible for parole for more than 14 years, and will remain on licence for five years after he is released.

He was sentenced at Guildford Crown Court,  sitting at Guildford Magistrates' Court today (Thursday, January 19).

He had been found guilty of two counts of rape, two counts of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, one count of threatening to kill, and one count of intimidating a witness, at the same court on December 5.

His Honour Judge Robert Fraser addressed Voedes today as he delivered his sentence: "You have devastated lives.

"This was a cold-blooded sexual attack on a 17-year-old girl where she was alone and without help.

"For very good reason she believed she was going to die that evening.

"It was utterly callous and clear evidence, if any is needed, that there is no limit to what you are wiling to inflict on others.

"She survived, albeit scarred by what must be an appalling memory of what you did to her."

Voedes waved to the public gallery as he was led down to the cells.

He had maintained that his victim "consented" to sexual intercourse, the court heard.

Defending, Mr John Cammegh said: "It may be said that that betrays a certain lack of empathy."

He added: "He is an absolutely broken man. To quote him (from earlier in the cells), 'I know I have to pay for what I have done'."

Voedes' terrified 17-year old victim cried out for her mother as she was dragged at knifepoint from Pizza Hut in Waterloo Road, Epsom, to nearby Court Recreation Ground before being raped in a "harrowing ordeal", the court heard.

Armed with a knife  he grabbed a woman by the hair, but she managed to escape his grasp due to the "selfless" actions of the restaurant's manager.

Voedes then turned his attention towards the petrified girl and told her "you are coming with me" as he marched her out of the restaurant on the night of June 17, 2016.

He led her to the nearby park  where he raped her twice and stabbed her in the stomach, believing he had left her for dead. He was arrested minutes later.

The manager of the Pizza Hut, Waqar Rafiq, suffered stab wounds to his arm as he tried to protect the girl  the court heard.

Judge Fraser said he would recommend Mr Rafiq for an award from the High Sheriff of Surrey and commended his bravery.

"His actions on June 17 were remarkable," Judge Fraser said.

"He bravely and selflessly put himself in harm's way without hesitation.

"He was stabbed and has a number of ongoing effects from that.

"I have no doubt his actions saved the victims' lives."
