The Winstanley estate in Battersea has reportedly been earmarked for demolition to be replaced by new homes, as communities secretary Sajid Javid announced a Government housing scheme is to receive a boost of tens of millions of pounds.

A further £32 million is being added to the £140 million loan programme announced in January by then-prime minister David Cameron.

The £172 million total pot will be available to councils, housing associations and private developers under the scheme led by Lord Heseltine and housing minister Gavin Barwell.

They will also be able access a "national strategy" aimed at addressing issues like sourcing finance for projects.

Mr Javid said estates "offer huge potential to become new thriving communities providing homes, jobs and opportunities and places that work for everyone".

Mr Barwell, also MP for Croydon Central, added: "The funding we are providing will help kick-start a renaissance for those estates that face tough challenges and have often been overlooked."

As well as the Winstanley estate, others may include the Lower Falinge estate in Rochdale and Broadwater Farm in Tottenham.

The £32 million extra being pumped into the scheme can be used for projects including feasibility studies, community engagement and procurement advice.

Lord Heseltine said: "The national strategy puts residents at the heart of reshaping their estates, working with local authorities and developers.

"Estate regeneration must be locally-led and this strategy sets out blueprints for success, to help guide the progress and provide aspiration for delivering tangible plans."
