A Twickenham mother completed the Ben Nevis Braveheart Triathlon with two friends in memory of her late husband, who died of the disease earlier this year.

Mother-of-two Sue Jones raised over £9,000 with friends Tim Bowden and David Stroud in memory of her deceased husband, Ed.

The challenge, which the team took on in a relay, included a 1.2 mile open water swim, a 56 mile road bike ride and a half marathon to the top of Ben Nevis.

Mrs Jones said: “When times were hard and I wanted to get out of the water, I thought of all those who had supported and sponsored us and I couldn’t let them or my team down.”

Mr Jones was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in May 2012, six years after the death of his father from the same disease.

He was shocked by the devastating prognosis, he was given a 1% chance of surviving for five years, and by the lack of progress in brain tumour treatments.

Mr Jones became passionate about increasing public awareness of brain tumours and was an active supporter of The Brain Tumour Charity, an organisation that aims to double survival of those suffering from brain tumours within ten years.

The charity’s Director of Fundraising, Geraldine Pipping, said: “We are immensely grateful to Sue and her family and friends for their determination to help others in the face of their own loss.”
