Sutton Council is set to approve plans for the development of a cancer research and treatment centre.

The authority will present the development framework for the London Cancer Hub to the housing, economy and business committee on Tuesday, September 27.

The centre is proposed to include an expansion of the existing Royal Marsden Hospital and Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), shops, cafes and hotel space for patients and families.

The science campus would be the second biggest of its kind in the world, create more than 13,000 jobs and double the space available for cancer research, which could see the ICR deliver at least two extra cancer drugs every five years.

Cllr Ruth Dombey, leader of the council, said: “The London Cancer Hub will create thousands of employment and training opportunities for local people.

"It will be a tremendous boost for our local economy by providing new business opportunities and drawing visitors to the borough.”
