Imaginative entrepreneurs have been offered to chance to open a shop rent-free in South Norwood.

Croydon Council is offering tenancies of up to six months at two newly refurbished shops in Portland Road as part of a drive to reinvigorate the area.

The lucky winners of the council-funded competition will be able to grow their business venture in the 32 sq m and 40 sq m units a short walk from Norwood Junction station.

Judges are looking for imaginative ideas for new or expanding enterprises to take advantage of the growth in trade expected in the High Street.

Councillor Mark Watson, cabinet member for economy and jobs, said: “We’re looking for people with vision, ambition and creativity who we can help and support to breathe life back into these empty shops.

“Our high streets and district centres are really important, so it’s vital we do everything we can to keep them lively, vibrant and commercially viable.”

Alongside the offer of free rent, the council will also provide business support and help with publicity and marketing to get the new ventures off the ground.

The initiative is part of a wider package of council-led regeneration programmes which is seeing £1.65m spent on improving public spaces, cultural activities and events, and business support.

Proposals must be sent in to the council by August 19.
