Richard Clifton, councillor for Sutton South, became the borough’s 52nd mayor during a full council meeting on Monday.
In his opening speech in the Europa Gallery, Cllr Clifton, first elected in 2010, said: “It’s a great honour to be elected to be mayor of the borough. I’m deeply touched.
“My wife Gloria and I will do our utmost to repay the trust you have shown in us and I sincerely thank you.“
He announced his chosen charities to support through fundraising in his first year of office would be Sutton Shop Mobility and the Alzheimer’s Society.
