A Kingston Hospital midwife won a regional award after she was nominated by the mother of a baby she delivered.

Midwives often play an important part in the build up to birth, and the birth itself, the Emma's Diary Mum's Midwife of the Year award allows mother's to pay their own tribute.

Gillian Breen had been in labour for 30 hours with her first baby when she arrived at Kingston Hospital and was paired with midwife Hilary Scott.

Mrs Breen said: "Hilary was absolutely amazing at the birth of our first baby. We really could not have asked for more.

"She was so calm and encouraging, and she made sure my husband was involved at every step. We knew we were in the best hands and as a result I felt energised, confident and determined.

"I’m sure she’s delivered thousands of babies in her 20 years as a midwife but on February 6, 2015 she made us feel like there had never been a more momentous birth."

Mrs Scott said: "My work as a midwife is a very important part of my life, and the women I help to care for are at its centre. To be nominated by Gillian for this award is the biggest honour I could have received.

"I am so proud to be in our profession and I love every minute of my work - the team, the women we care for, the babies we help to deliver and the families we meet. I am truly very lucky."

The award is part of The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) Annual Midwifery Awards, recognising the work done by midwives across the country.

The RCM’s Annual Awards, now in its 14th year, is on March 8, where Mrs Scott will collect her trophy.

Kingston Hospital has 202 midwives, supported by a team including 78 support workers and 10 high dependency nurses.
