A young adventurer and his family who have spent the past five years travelling the globe do not have plans to come back anytime soon.

The Hilder Nine family, of Merton Hall Road, Wimbledon, set sail in 2010 on their 44ft sailing boat ‘Evita’, after the father's illness set them on an unusual path.

The family – Ian, 51, Paula, 42, Raul, 13, Oskar, 11, and Eva, nine - began their adventure in the Canary Islands, before moving on to the Caribbean Sea and then across the Pacific to Australia.

They left Evita in Australia to return to Wimbledon for two years, for Mr. Hilder to return to work and the children to return to Wimbledon Chase Primary School.

But in 2013 they returned to Australia, travelling up the coast and then on to Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and Chagos.

The family are currently on the shores of Madagascar, and are planning on sailing back to England in 2016 after visiting the Cape of Good Hope and Brazil.

Oskar, who describes himself as an “11-year-old Wimbledonian circumnavigator” said: “It has always been a dream of my dad’s to sail around the world.

“A few years ago he got very sick and that made him realise that you have to make the most of your time.

"If you say you will do it one day, maybe that day will never come.

“The first thing was then to persuade my mum that it was a good idea.”

Oskar’s favourite place so far has been the Chagos Islands, located in the Indian Ocean 500km south of the Maldives.

He said: “I loved this place so much because we were living in paradise: it was an archipelago in the middle of the Indian ocean where we sailors were the only people living there.

"There was no internet, shops, electricity or houses.

“Every day, we would go out with our dingy and brought our fishing rods with us, hoping that we would be able to go back to Evita with some fish in hand.”

And although Oskar, his mother and sister are ready to return to Wimbledon next year, his father and brother Raul are hoping to keep travelling, perhaps even to Antarctica.
