Patients admitted to St Helier Hospital with a hip fracture receive some of the best care in the country according to a new report.

St Helier Hospital exceeded national averages for the speed of care delivered despite being London's second busiest hospital for hip fractures according to the report.

The annual National Hip Fracture Database report measures 180 hospitals against a number of clinical standards and practices.

The report showed that last year 431 patients entered the hospital and despite the high admittance numbers St Helier's Hip Fracture Unit was the best performing in the capital.

Figures from the report show that 91 per cent of patients had surgery on the day they arrived at the hospital and that 99 per cent had a senior geriatric review within three days. This is compared a national average of 72 per cent and 85 per cent respectively.

Dr James Marsh, joint medical director at the Trust, said: "This is a fantastic result and I would like to thank the hip fracture team at St Helier for all of their hard work.

"This will also be welcome news for local people too, as it proves, once again, that Epsom and St Helier hospitals provide patients with some of the best care in the country."
