Double celebrations took place at a sheltered house as staff unveiled a brand new garden at the same time as honouring a volunteer’s outstanding service.
Wendover House, in Chessington Road, West Ewell, is run by the charity Abbeyfield Ewell Society and is home to six elderly people who are the latest in a long-line of residents to owe a debt of gratitude to Brenda Purdue.
Mrs Purdue, 84, of Ruxley Lane, West Ewell, has been volunteering at the home for 25 years and this was recognised on Saturday, August 1, when she was given the honour of cutting the ribbon on its newly landscaped garden.
The former nanny and health worker, who is married to Monty, is hugely loved and respected for the hours she gives up to make the home a welcoming environment; befriending and supporting many residents over the years.
The couple’s son Nick was even present on the day as he is the home’s gardener who contributed to the new design and landscaping all with the aim of improving access for residents.
Administrator Caroline Hayhurst said: "It was a lovely celebration. Brenda has done so much for us over the years. She’s fantastic and we are so lucky to have her."
