Neighbours have been kicking up a stink after this growing mountain of rubbish has been left untouched for a week.

Mattresses, piles of bags of rotting rubbish and wooden planks are among the items apparently dumped in Church Road, Mitcham, opposite Mitcham Parish Church.

Pleas to Merton Council’s waste team previously fell on deaf ears, with the monstrosity sitting in the ward of councillor Judy Saunders, who is the cabinet member for environmental cleanliness and parking.

Coun Saunders has now pledged to identify culprits and have the rubbish removed "in the next few days."

Neighbours have taken to Twitter in a bid to get the rubbish cleared up, with Sandra Vogel of the Mitcham Cricket Green Community and Heritage group, Conservative former parliamentary candidate Paul Holmes and UKIP former candidate Richard Hilton all pleading with the council on Twitter to take action.

People have reported the awful stench of the rubbish to the council.

Coun Saunders said, "It is unacceptable that someone has dumped this rubbish for the council to clean up.

"As soon as we were made aware of the fly tip, we checked that the land in question was our property and now our waste operations team will be looking at the contents of the fly tip and will clean up the area over the next few days.

"Fly tipping is a criminal offence and where we can ascertain who dumped the rubbish, we do not hesitate to prosecute."
