One of Kingston’s best known nightspots announced its closure today.

McClusky’s in Thames Street, posted the news on its Facebook page this afternoon.

It said: “McClusky’s Kingston is sadly officially closed! We will not longer be open for business.

“We would like to thank all our customers we have had over the years and that have partied with us.

“We have had some amazing events in this venue and made it Kingston’s number one place to party for a wide selection of people.

“Everyone on site is of course saddened by the news, it’s a shock to us. RIP McClusky’s 2015.”

Pete Doherty played at the venue in 2009, and in between songs tried to light a cigarette with a fan’s mobile phone before realising it was not a lighter.

Other notable gigs over the years at the hotspot include New Slang, Jamie T and Maximo Park.

A new bar, The Viper Room, was announced for Kingston Riverside last week. There is speculation McClusky's could be being rebranded or taken over by the same owners.

The Viper Rooms is set to open in late Summer.

The other two clubs in Kingston, Hippodrome and Pryzm,  are both run by the Deltic Group, formerly known as Luminar.

Kingston's Grove ward Councillor Jon Tolley has run club nights in McCluskys in conjunction with his music store Banquet Records.

His well-known New Slang club night, known for introducing up and coming talent also took residency at the club for some time.

Coun Tolley said: “It is a shame. I think the fact that they run a popular nightclub in a venue that is essentially a converted restaurant is testament to how great the staff are.

“If both of the big nightclubs in Kingston are run by the same company then I don’t think that can be a good thing for customers.”
