The family of a late Bafta award-winning costume designer has donated a £1,000 prize to support Wimbledon's best emerging design talent.

Remembered: Ann Hollowood at work and one of her designs

Ann Hollowood got a grounding in design at Wimbledon College of Art before going on to win two Emmys and a Bafta for her work on Edward VIII The Storyteller and Merlin featuring Helena Bonham Carter.

The talented designer from St Albans died of a brain tumour aged 72 in February last year.

Shortly before she died, she agreed to her family's wish to set up a fund in her name to support the next generation of costume design talent.

Her husband, retired sailor Bill Iden, 63, said: "This was her passion. She did what she loved and she was very good at it.

"At her funeral the prize fund was on the order of service. We told people if they wanted to they could contribute and a lot did so that's how it started."

This year's prize winner is Jennifer Gregory, 23, for her oriental costume inspired by Godfrey Kneller's 17th-century painting The Chinese Convert.

The BA (Hons) Theatre and Screen Costume Design graduate, who achieved a first class degree, said she was drawn to the themes of personal displacement and exploration in the painting.

"My character is a curious, deviating individual." she said. "Being guided purely by his spiritual belief he has travelled across the world, constantly gathering knowledge of cultures and natures as he seeks truth and reason."

Costume designer and pathway leader Abigail Hammond, who helped judge the prize, said: "The prize is a recognition of the significance of our creative area.

"It's not all about frills. These are highly intelligent students and it's really important to recognise the skill of our trade."

Miss Gregory's design is currently on display as part of the 2015 graduate show at Wimbledon College of Art.
