A crowd gathered to watch a man say goodbye to his one-sided beard on Friday after he managed to raise nearly £11,500 for charity.

Chas March, 45, from Epsom Downs, grew the bizarre beard as a bet for Movember, but decided to keep it when donations kept coming in.

During the half-year charity challenge, Mr March, who works at Whitemarch Landscapes, also developed an alter ego, known as Arthur Beard-Face.

Your Local Guardian:

As well as having a cut-throat razor shave on Friday, he said his long-time colleague Joe Darby "nicked a bit off" with a hedge trimmer.

Mr March said: "It’s time had come. It feels a bit weird now, even a few days later. My wife loves me again. She’s always loved me, but she loves me more. She didn’t like it."

Jackie Quinn Estate Agents hosted the beard shave at their new office in the Street, Ashtead on Friday afternoon.

Director Ms Quinn said businesses and local people came together to support Mr March and help raise more money for mental health charity Wiltshire Mind.

Your Local Guardian:

She said: "Chas lives and works locally and he does so much for the community and charity.

"He was going to shave it off in his bathroom. After six months and such an interesting story, it would be a shame not to celebrate it."
