Adult educators celebrated more than a quarter of a century helping some 4,000 people bolster their skills.

Kingston Adult Education’s open learning programme is 21 years old this year and founding members joined students, staff and governors to mark the milestone.

Jean Garvey, who began teaching English at the open learning centre in 1994, is still a fixture in the classroom. Kingston Council’s Scott Herbertson, who helped set up the programme, was also on hand to share some celebration cake.

Mayor of Kingston Councillor Ken Smith said: “Hundreds of adults attend for many different reasons and so far more than 4,000 learners have passed through the doors at the Open Learning Centre, Kingston, and King Charles Centre, Surbiton.

“All open learning tutors are highly qualified and committed to improving the skills of the learners, many of whom achieve qualifications, gain confidence and go on to fulfil lifelong ambitions.”

Open learning helps adults to improve their maths and English.

Adult educators provide three skills courses as well as GCSEs in these subject.
