A 47-year-old man apparently returning home from a night out fell on to the tube tracks but was rescued before he could be hit by a train.

Firefighters, ambulance and police were called to Colliers Wood station at about 10.15pm on Saturday to reports of a man on the tracks.

Transport for London was able to halt trains, as firefighters safely rescued the man.

He was treated for a facial injury and taken to St George's Hospital in Tooting.

Northern Line trains between Kennington and Morden were severely disrupted while the tracks were cleared.

A Wimbledon firefighter said: "We had to get him off the tracks and onto the platform and the ambulance took him to hospital. I think he's been drinking."

It comes just weeks after Colliers Wood man Nick Mann was fatally hit by a train at Old Street station.

Earlier this year a woman survived after being dragged under a train at Clapham South station when her coat got trapped in a door.

The incidents have lead to calls for a safety review on London Underground stations.

Pat Hansberry, London Underground's operations director for the Northern line, said: "On Saturday evening a passenger safely alighted a Northern line train at Colliers Wood Tube station.

"The passenger then fell onto the track after the train departed.  At no point was the passenger in contact with a train whilst on the track.

"As part of our standard safety procedures the London Ambulance Service was called to attend the scene, as was the London Fire Brigade, and the passenger was removed safely by staff and emergency services.

"The passenger was also taken to hospital as a precaution.”

The number of major injuries suffered on the London Underground network decreased from 197 in 2012-13 to 139 in 2013-14.
