Reptiles were at large in Wimbledon Common last Sunday when children were treated to a handling session from specialists.

Lucas and Emma Rudge surprised children from the Wimbledon Common Nature Club with giant snails, snakes and a bearded dragon when they arrived at the common.

They came with 11 different reptiles for the children to handle including a royal python, a bearded dragon, a blue tongued skink and a giant millipede.

"It was a real joy to see the children handling the wildlife and very special for us all to be able to get up close and personal to them," said club leader Auriel Glanville.

Lucas and Emma work for Reptile Events, a private rescue centre based in south London.

In the session, they talked about the life, food and habitats of reptiles, while allowing the children to hold them.

Their ultimate goal is to increase the understanding around reptiles, which will in turn help the public overcome any phobias they may have.

They work on a variety of events such as birthday parties and photographic sessions for young people over the age of five.
