A fly-tipper who dumped fences, a door and wooden panelling near his home has been fined hundreds of pounds.

Sylwester Stefanski, 37, got more than he bargained for when he was caught trying to discard them on a grass verge near his home in Bordesley Road, Morden.

Mr Stefanski admitted fly-tipping and was fined a total of £370 at Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, January 13.

It is the second fly-tipping prosecution by Merton Council in recent weeks.

In December Wimbledon resident Kashif Malik, 34, of Merton High Street, was found guilty of fly-tipping in Hatfield Mead, Morden.

He was ordered to pay a £600 fine, the victim surcharge of £60 and the prosecution costs worth £1,000.

The action is part of Merton Council’s anti-litter campaign, a problem it says it spends £5million on every year.

Merton Council’s cabinet member for environmental cleanliness and parking, Councillor Judy Saunders said: "The majority of our residents want to work with us to keep Merton clean and tidy.

"As both these cases show, anyone we catch fly-tipping could face a court conviction and substantial fines."

"Our enforcement teams are on the lookout for offenders and won’t let them get away with it."

If people witness fly-tipping, they should note down as many details of the event as possible and let the council know at merton.gov.uk/street-cleaning.
