A district line train from Richmond was held up after a group of university students stripped naked on Wednesday evening.

The group of men, who were wearing Imperial College Rugby jumpers, were said to be drinking booze and taking part in a game.

According to reports, the game involved getting off the train at a station, stripping naked and boarding again before it left the platform.

At least one student stripped at Richmond station before the train was finally taken out of service and evacuated at Stamford Brook.

A British Transport Police (BTP) spokesman said: "Our officers were called to Stamford Brook station shortly after 5.30pm on Wednesday, October 29, to reports of a group of naked men on a district line train between Richmond and Upminster.

"We conducted a search of the area but did not find anyone matching the description.

"Enquiries continue."

A Transport for London spokesman said the train had to be held for eight minutes at Stamford Brook.

He said: "At about 5.36pm, we had a train held at Stamford Brook for about eight minutes for a customer incident where BTP were called.

"Passengers were asked to get off the train while the incident was being dealt with."

A spokesman for Imperial College London confirmed the rugby team had been suspended pending an internal investigation.

They said: "The Students’ Union has very clear policies and rules in place regarding the behaviour of all members of its clubs and societies.

"Any breach of these policies and rules is taken very seriously by the college and the Students’ Union, and disciplinary action will be taken where necessary. "As a result of this incident the union has suspended the team in question pending investigation."

Until several months ago, the Imperial College London's sports teams used facilities at Udney Park Road in Teddington.
