It is time to start rummaging in the cupboards for hats, scarves and gloves as the winter begins to creep upon us.

While the evenings may soon be getting darker earlier, the grounds of Hampton Court Palace will be lit up throughout the festive season as its famous ice rink returns.

Opening on November 21, people will once again be able to skate in front of Henry VIII’s historic palace and alongside the River Thames.

The rink has been a popular seasonal attraction for many years and is suitable for the whole family and skaters of all abilities.

This year the rink is presented by Cousins Entertainment, which is run by Olympic gold medallist and Dancing on Ice judge, Robin Cousins.

The company, which was set up nearly 15 years ago, operates ice rinks around the country including those at Winchester Cathedral and Winter Wonderland in Cardiff.

Mr Cousins says: "We are really excited to be taking the reins at Hampton Court for the first time this winter.

“The palace is a great setting for the festivities, especially lit up in the evenings when it looks truly magical, and we hope to develop the attraction for many years.”

An off-rink ice bar and cafe is also available for those who do not want to take to the ice but still want to enjoy the atmosphere.

Paul Gray, director of Hampton Court Palace, says: "The ice rink at Hampton Court Palace is one of the real highlights of the festive season, and draws thousands of visitors to enjoy this splendid palace. We look forward to making Christmas 2014 our best year yet."
