Sixteen gang members have been sentenced to a total of 37 years in prison for drug offences including a teenager from Sutton.

Judge Lord Nicholas Price QC told Kingston Crown Court one of the defendants, 25-year old Islam Mahmoud from Roehampton, was "in a different league" to other dealers and performed a very significant role within the drugs network.

Mahmoud, of Woking Close, was sentenced to five years for one count of supplying cocaine after pleading guilty on April 10.

The operation, cracking down on gangs and drug supply in Wandsworth, was carried out by a Trident Central Gangs Unit and borough police.

Officers targeted the key individuals before eventually raiding addresses in and around the Roehampton estate.

Police raids in March uncovered heroin, cannabis, paraphernalia, significant sums of money and a stun gun.

Wandsworth Detective Chief Superintendent Richard Smith said: "Every person we believe to be affiliated to a gang in Wandsworth is given the opportunity and support to turn their back on this lifestyle through our multi agency partnership.

"However, those who choose not to accept this help and support can expect us to target them through enforcement."

The final sentence was handed out at Kingston Crown Court on Tuesday, September 16.
