Fire fighters evacuate 20 during high-rise Battersea flat fire

One man had a lucky escape from a fire in his bedroom at a block of flats in Dagnall Street.

Four fire engines and 21 firefighters attended the blaze, thought to have been caused by candles placed near curtains.

The man managed to escape through the kitchen window after finding his bedroom alight and was taken by ambulance to hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire started just after 12am and was under control by 1.05am.

Part of the ground floor flat was damaged. Firefighters said there was no working smoke alarm.

Less than half an hour after firefighters finished tackling that blaze, another broke out in Searles Close.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued a woman from her bedroom following a fire in a block of maisonettes.

The woman was woken up by her smoke alarm, led to safety by firefighters and taken to hospital for smoke inhalation.

Four fire engines and 21 fire fighters attended the second fire, which is under investigation.

The blaze which damaged part of the stairs and landing was brought under control by 2.20am.
