Entertainment retailer HMV is to open a new shop in Croydon 16 months after leaving the town.

The chain will launch a new store in North End in September, following the closure of its in branch in the same street in April.

Sixteen staff in Croydon lost their jobs when the previous store shut along with 60 other branches across the country.

The new branch will open at 38-40 North End, yards away from the previous store, by the entrance of the Whitgift Centre.

The unit was previously home to budget clothing retailer Fashion 4 Less.

Restructing specialist Hilco bought 141 HMV stores from administrator Deloitte last year, but the Croydon branch was not part of the deal.

Poundworld has since opened in North End at the location of the former HMV.

A HMV spokeswoman said: "We’re delighted to announce that HMV Croydon will be opening on Thursday 4th September at 38 – 40 North End.

"We originally opened our Croydon store in 1991 trading there until 2013.

"Croydon is a very important area for us, so following a short break we’re looking forward to welcoming customers to their new store.

"The store will have highly experienced and knowledgeable staff from day one, as the majority have been relocated from other stores."

HMV closed its branch in Sutton High Street this week.
