Gardens at a residential care home in Walton have been transformed as part of a community payback scheme.

Sherwood House, run by Walton Charity, received the outdoor makeover from offenders carrying out unpaid work under the Surrey and Sussex Probation Trust community payback scheme.

Under the scheme, offenders who have been sentenced to unpaid work by a court make amends to the community by helping out with landscaping and forestry, grounds clearance, building and maintenance, painting and decorating and litter picking and graffiti removal.

During the first week of work at the Severn Drive home, 10 workers prepared the garden for the residents’ summer party by mowing lawns, weeding and digging borders.

In the weeks that followed, concrete tiles were re-laid around the wheelchair friendly garden area to make the ground more level and accessible, as well having a tidy up of the garden.

Jo Gardner, manager of Sherwood House, said: “The payback team have done some great work for the past few weeks, getting the garden in great shape before our summer party.

“Our gardens and seating area are looking good. We hope that they will be able to do more work to the grounds around Sherwood House.”
