The leader of Lambeth council is urging people to tell Boris Johnson what they think of his proposals to shut Clapham fire station, at a meeting next month.

Since the decision was announced in March, London Fire Brigade has said closing the station will increase the time it takes a fire engine to reach an emergency.

Councillor Lib Peck said: “I urge everyone who is concerned about the threat to Clapham fire station to come along to the public meeting on May 16, at Lambeth Town Hall.

"This is an important opportunity for local people to tell Boris Johnson what they think of his proposal to close Clapham Fire station.

"We know that closing Clapham fire station will threaten the safety of the public because the fire brigade have said the closure will add an average of 40 seconds to the time it takes a fire engine to reach an emergency.

"That’s why we are campaigning to save Clapham fire station from closure.”

The consultation on the Draft Fifth London Safety Plan began on March 4 and will continue until June 17.

The plans propse closing 12 fire stations, removing 18 fire engines, relocating four fire engines and reducing the number of firefighter posts by 520 to make savings of £28.8m.
