More than 2,000 people attended the second annual Twickenham Police Station open day last Sunday.

The free event saw people visit the station throughout the day for a tour of the custody unit and a chance to throw a sponge at a copper.

Teams from various departments were on hand to talk to residents, including the dog support unit and the marine police.

All money raised in the soak a bobby game, in which safer neighbourhood teams stood in old-fashioned wooden stocks while children threw wet sponges at them, will go toward the Richmond Furniture Scheme, which helps supply people in need with affordable furniture.

The RNLI, London Fire Brigade and Kneller Hall’s the Corp of Army Music’s quintet were on hand to inform and entertain visitors. The RNLI raised £340 through souvenir sales and donations.

Detective Superintendent Christos Kalamatianos said: “The day was a triumph. I am delighted at the record number of visitors from our community that attended and took the time to come and experience this unique opportunity.”
