‘Honest’ head has rung the changes

Our fourth nomination for Kingston's Best Headteacher is Sister Josephine Goggin from Our Lady Immaculate Catholic Primary School in Ewell Road, Tolworth.

She has been nominated by Kay Ryan and Alina Brennan, who said: "Sister Josephine is in her sixth year at our school and in this time she has changed the whole for the better. Sister Josephine is a warm welcoming, honest, trustworthy head and has an open door policy with parents, children and staff."

Sister Josephine, 59, was born in Cork and moved to Somerset to complete her secondary education and teacher training. She said: "I trained at what was known then as the Digby Stuart College, a Catholic college. It's now part of Roehampton University. I then took up my first teaching post back in Somerset."

Our Lady Immaculate is Sister Josephine's third headship, having worked at St Anne's in Lambeth and then at a school in Frome in Somerset. She moved to Our Lady Immaculate in September 2000. She said: "The past seven years have been a source of real professional and personal satisfaction. I think I always wanted to teach primary because the children are so much more enthusiastic."

Sister Josephine

Since taking over, Sister Josephine, a religious sister, has made many changes to the school, including adding a new astroturf pitch. She said: "There have been significant improvements, mostly to the physical environment of the school. There have been extensions to classrooms, new ICT facilities and we are planning a large refurbishment of the hall."
