A Surbiton-based firefighter and campaigner has been nominated for a national award for action taken on sustainability.

Simon Jakeman is in the final three in the Community Hero category of The Climate Coalition’s Green Heart Hero Awards.

He said: “As a firefighter I have seen up close the devastation that a changing climate causes to people’s daily lives, be it floods, wildfires or storms. I think it’s important to tackle climate change because we are only caretakers of this amazing interconnected planet full of life.

“I was totally amazed, truly honoured and humbled that I have been nominated for an award. We can all play our part for a sustainable future, and I hope my nomination gives others a nudge to do their bit too.”

A firefighter for 22 years, Mr Jakeman has been nominated for his work to making Surbiton London’s greenest fire station, as well as travelling around giving advice to other fire brigades across the country.

The award ceremony will take place on Tuesday, March 13, at Parliament.
