Four Kingston students are set to fly to Canada to compete in the world final of the Kids’ Lit Quiz 2017.

Tomas Caldon, Freddie Pflanz, Hal Purton, all 13, and Katie Monaghan, 11, from Kingston Grammar School, will join finalists from Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the USA from June 30 to July 7.

They will share their love of books, explore the Canadian outdoors, meet authors and attend a gala dinner at the Palais Royale.

The team won the national finals in December 2016 and have since received a lot of support from the school community to raise money towards their flights.

Katie Monaghan said: “I can’t believe it. I didn’t imagine when I started KGS last year that I would achieve something like this. When we walked into the regional competition back in December, we never dreamt we would go on to represent the UK in Canada.”

Headmaster Stephen Lehec said: “As a school we are thrilled with the achievements of Katie, Freddie, Tomas and Hal. They have performed exceptionally well throughout the competition, winning against some tough competition from schools around the country.

“These students embody the ethos of the School, combining academic rigour with teamwork and intellectual curiosity. We wish they every success in the final.”

They will compete on Monday, July 3, at 6pm.
