A "maverick" Hounslow councillor has been honoured for his 25 years of service.

Councillor Peter de Vic Carey, who represents Osterley and Spring Grove, has been made a freeman of the borough in gratitude for his service.

Some of the words his colleagues have used to describe him? Charming, fun, a gentleman, a maverick - my own would be a great mate.

Councillor Carey was first elected in 1968, and with the exception of one break, has served consistently since then.

The married dad-of-two said: "I became a councillor because I wanted to get involved in my local community, and I thought that this was a good way. My two council passions have been chairing the overview and scrutiny panel and being involved in planning committees. I've enjoyed both very much.

"I hope I have made a difference for the better. I have always been a non-partisan councillor, and always tried to be responsible and representative."

Councillor Barbara Reid, who recommended him for the honour, said: "This is an honour richly deserved.

"For 25 years, Peter has served the people of our borough with total commitment and integrity. He has been steadfast in his principles, but at the same time been pragmatic and put the people of his ward and Hounslow first and foremost.

"In his council work, Peter's two main passions are planning and scrutiny. He excels at both and over the last two years especially he has chaired scrutiny with the complete balance and fairness that are a hallmark of his character.

"Some of the words his colleagues have used to describe him? Charming, fun, a gentleman, a maverick - my own would be a great mate."

Councillor Carey, a solicitor, has been married to Mary for 49 years.

As well as two children, Andrew and Carole, he has three grandsons, Charlie, Archie and Toby.
