Volunteers are invited to help clean up the River Wandle today.

The clean up is being organised by the Wandle Trust, a charity dedicated to restoring the health of the river.

A health and safety briefing will be given before the clean up starts at 11am.

Participants are encouraged to wear old clothes, waterproofs and sturdy shoes.

Tea, coffee and cakes will be provided, with volunteers invited to bring their own picnic.

The Wandle is about nine miles long and passes through Croydon, Sutton, Merton, and Wandsworth to join the River Thames on the Tideway at Wandsworth.

A £150,000 investment programme is set to take place to stop tonnes of silt from entering it in Carshalton, and make it better wildlife such as brown trout and kingfishers.

The clean up is taking place in Weir Road, Wimbledon, from 11am to 3pm.
