Government funds to help repair flood damage

Sutton schools have received almost £120,000 from the Government to help repair flood damage.

The money, £118,000, is part of a £4million package spread across 21 councils in London and southern England.

Other councils to get the money include Croydon, £121,580, Kingston, £128,362, Lambeth, £50,000, Merton, £156,489, Richmond, £159,952, Surrey, £50,266, Sutton, £118,908, and Wandsworth, £110,591.

Sutton deputy leader Colin Hall said: "This is excellent news and we welcome the Government's support in assisting our schools and younger people and their families who were affected by the floods.

"We will assess needs based on the Government's criteria in terms of issuing the grants, which we hope to do as soon as possible."

The Government has said the grant can only be spent on education, childcare or improving the welfare of children and their parents.

It can be spent on temporary accommodation for schools and Sure Start children's centres, extra summer activities for children and young people from communities affected by flooding and support workers to help parents, children and young people handle the stress of flooding.

Other councils to get the money include Gloucestershire, Oxfordshire, Herefordshire and Reading.
